Hon. Daniel Naanlong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been officially sworn in as the new Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.

This transition occurred during an emergency sitting at the temporary Assembly Complex in the Old Government House, Jos, following the resignation of Gabriel Dewan of the Young Peoples Party (YPP) earlier today, Wednesday, 2 July 2025.

Naanlong, who represents Mikang constituency and served as majority leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously elected by his 24 colleagues.

Deputy Speaker Gwotta Ajang presided over the session and facilitated the smooth leadership change.

Insiders report that the swearing-in followed a closed‑door talk between Governor Caleb Mutfwang, outgoing Speaker Dewan, and other lawmakers aimed at easing recent political tensions in the Assembly.

Dewan, the Assembly’s only YPP member, resigned as part of efforts to stabilise the legislature.
