The Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday directed the member representing Egor Constituency, Natasha Irobosa Osawaru, to appear before its Ethics and Privileges Committee within one week following the circulation of a viral video in which she was involved in a heated altercation with her husband, renowned Nigerian singer Innocent Ujah Idibia (2Baba).

The House said the lawmaker’s conduct had placed the Assembly in public disrepute, a position the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, described as embarrassing” for the legislature.

“For the past one week, she has been, let me use the word, trending negatively, both on electronic media and social media platforms. Television such as TVC, Silverbird, and other television stations,” the Speaker told members during Tuesday’s plenary.

Agbebaku lamented that the incident and the attention it has drawn to the assembly were unbecoming of a lawmaker and warned that the matter could not be allowed to erode the House’s reputation.

“Distinguished Members, of recent, this Honourable House, with cerebral and highly educated members, have been dragged to the mud for too long by our colleague, Honourable Natasha Irobosa Osawaru,” he said.

“We want to let the public know that this House is a decent and reputable House. In Nigeria, as a whole, this House is the best House. That is the truth. But we have responsible members in this House. Intelligent members in this House. Members that know what they are doing. So the attitude or the misconduct of a member cannot drag the House to disrepute.”

Naijaonpoint reports that the row that triggered the Assembly’s action was captured in a video that went viral on social media.

In the footage, filmed inside a shop in London, Natasha is heard confronting her husband and repeatedly raising her voice. The lawmaker’s words in the clip, which have been widely shared and discussed include: “Don’t do it. Don’t fucking do it! Na everyday you go dey shout for me? Wetin dey happen? Why are you raising your voice at me?”

The clip’s circulation across platforms and its pick-up by national television stations were specifically cited by the Speaker as part of the reason for the summons.

In response to the uproar, the Speaker directed that Natasha appear before the Ethics and Privileges Committee within one week to explain her conduct and why, in the view of the House leadership, she is “dragging the name of the House in the mud.”

The committee, the House said, has been given two weeks to investigate the matter and submit its report to the full Assembly.

Naijaonpoint reports that the directive suggests a formal inquiry that could consider whether the lawmaker’s private conduct, publicised widely online, amounts to a breach of the Assembly’s code of conduct or otherwise warrants sanction.

Throughout his remarks, Agbebaku framed the action as necessary to protect the institution’s standing, repeatedly emphasising the Assembly’s self-view as a “decent and reputable House” populated by “cerebral and highly educated” members.

He portrayed the summons as a disciplinary step to preserve that reputation rather than a personal attack.

“So the attitude or the misconduct of a member cannot drag the House to disrepute,” he concluded.
