The Kano State House of Assembly has been thrown into deep mourning after losing two of its members in a single day.
This tragic development happened on Wednesday and has shocked lawmakers, government officials, and residents across the state.
The deaths affected Aminu Ungogo and Sarki Daneji, both serving members of the Assembly.
Reports indicate that the two lawmakers passed away within hours of each other, creating an atmosphere of grief inside the legislative chamber.
Ungogo, who represented Ungogo constituency, was the first to die. He was the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, a key position in the Assembly. His death reportedly occurred inside the Assembly complex after a brief illness while he was carrying out his official duties.
The development was officially confirmed in a statement issued by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, on Wednesday.
“The late Hon. Ungogo died while in active duty at the Kano State House of Assembly. He is survived by his wife and children,” the statement read.
The sudden loss has drawn emotional reactions from lawmakers and staff of the Assembly, many of whom described Ungogo as dedicated, calm, and deeply committed to public service. Colleagues said he remained active until his final moments and was fully engaged in legislative responsibilities.
Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He condoled with the family of the deceased lawmaker, his constituents, and members of the Assembly. The Speaker described the loss as painful and difficult to replace.
“Hon. Ungogo’s death comes at a critical time when Kano citizens needed him most,” he said.
Ungogo was scheduled to be buried later on Wednesday at exactly 6:00pm in his hometown, in line with Islamic rites.
Hours after Ungogo’s death, the Assembly was hit by another tragedy with the passing of Aliyu Sarkin Daneji, popularly known as Sarki Daneji. His death further deepened the grief within the House, making it one of the darkest days in the history of the Kano legislature.
Lawmakers were seen in sober mood as plenary activities were disrupted. Several members described the loss of two colleagues in one day as shocking and emotionally draining.
The leadership of the Assembly is expected to officially announce mourning activities and possible suspension of legislative proceedings in honour of the late lawmakers.
