At the last sitting on October 24, the court had adjourned the case till October 27 for Kanu to open his defence. The IPOB leader had earlier informed the court of his intention to summon witnesses to testify on his behalf.
However, when the case resumed on Monday, Kanu told the court that after reviewing the case file, he was convinced that there was no valid charge against him.
He argued that since he was subjected to what he described as an “unlawful trial” and no credible charge exists, there was no need to proceed with any defence.
Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the matter, directed Kanu to file a written address to that effect and serve the prosecution.
The judge also advised him to consult legal experts on the implications of his decision to forgo calling witnesses.
Subsequently, the case was adjourned to November 4, 5, and 6 for the adoption of final written addresses, based on Kanu’s position that the evidence and charges presented so far have failed to establish any case against him.
