The Osun State Police Command has freed the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, following his detention over a shooting incident that occurred during an APC rally in Ilesa.
Adejoorin was taken into custody on Saturday after violence broke out around the Isokun area of the town, leaving three people with gunshot injuries.
The commissioner was reportedly intercepted by members of the police Intelligence Response Team while they were heading to the scene after receiving a distress call.
According to the command, an Amotekun operative was found in Adejoorin’s vehicle when it was stopped. Both men were subsequently taken to the police headquarters in Osogbo for questioning.
Police spokesman, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed Adejoorin’s release on Sunday but said he could not establish whether the Amotekun operative arrested with him had also regained his freedom.
“The commissioner has been released. He was released today. But the Amotekun that was arrested with him, I can’t confirm his release yet because I am still gathering my facts,” Ojelabi stated.
The police said three people were wounded in the shooting and were taken to different hospitals for treatment. Four spent cartridges were also reportedly recovered, while a pump-action rifle was seized from the arrested Amotekun operative.
The incident has sparked accusations between the APC and the Accord Party, with both political camps giving different accounts of how the violence started.
While an APC campaign official, Folarin Fafowora, alleged that armed men attached to an official convoy opened fire during the rally, the Imole Campaign Council spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, accused APC supporters of carrying out the shooting and attacking Accord Party property.
The police said investigations were still underway to determine those responsible for the shooting and establish the circumstances surrounding the commissioner’s presence in the area.
