The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reportedly filed charges against human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
Naijaonpoint understands that the activist arraignment has also been scheduled for Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Sowore, the Publisher of Sahara Reporters, is expected to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
However, details of the case and the specific charges were still unclear.
A source familiar with the matter told Sahara Reporters on Thursday: “The police have filed charges and he is set to be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on Thursday.”
Recall that Sowore has a pending case in court with the police, leading to the seizure of his passport by the court.
In January 2025, Sowore was slammed with 17 counts of cybercrime offences, all tied to his public labelling of Egbetokun as “illegal.”
The charges were filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, and Sowore was arraigned shortly after. The indictment cited a video clip he posted online, in which he reiterated his claim and called for mass resistance against what he described as “constitutional vandalism.”
Sowore used the phrase “Illegal IGP” repeatedly in social media posts and public speeches to describe Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.
His criticism stemmed from what he called an unconstitutional extension of Egbetokun’s tenure. The IGP, who had reached the statutory retirement age of 60 in September 2024, was granted an extension following a controversial amendment to the Police Act, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu. Sowore has repeatedly described this as a blatant abuse of power.
In July 2025, Sowore led a protest alongside retired police officers demanding better pensions and the removal of the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
