Senate has given conditions for Natasha’s Return to Office
Naijaonpoint Media gathered that the Nigerian Senate has clarified that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, cannot resume her legislative duties until the Court of Appeal delivers its verdict on her suspension.
In a letter signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, and released on Tuesday, September 9, the Senate explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension remains valid, stressing that the matter is still before the court.
Senate Explains Position
Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier informed the Senate of her intention to return on September 4, 2025, which she claimed marked the end of her six-month suspension. However, the Senate maintained that her suspension began on March 6, 2025, and therefore remains in effect until the judiciary rules on the case.
“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read.
Background to Suspension
The embattled senator was suspended in March 2025 following a resolution of the Senate, which accused her of acts of gross misconduct and violation of the chamber’s standing orders. The Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the decision, prompting Akpoti-Uduaghan to appeal.
While the senator has repeatedly argued that her suspension was punishment for petitioning against Senate President Godswill Akpabio over allegations of sexual harassment, the Senate insists the disciplinary action was unrelated to her claims.
What Next?
The Senate leadership, headed by Akpabio, stated that it would only review Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension after the Court of Appeal delivers its judgment. Until then, her seat in the Red Chamber will remain vacant.
