Tension erupted on Sunday, November 9, 2025, along Onitsha Road, Anambra State, after some Nigerian Army personnel allegedly opened fire on police officers returning from election duty.
It was gathered that the clash occurred at a military checkpoint, where an argument broke out between officers of both security agencies before the soldiers reportedly fired shots at the policemen.
One of the affected policemen, who spoke to SaharaReporters, said the confrontation escalated suddenly.
“Happening now on our way coming back from Anambra State election, we had a misunderstanding with Army personnel at a military checkpoint. Before we know what was going on, they opened fire on us,” he said.
He added that one officer was shot directly in the chest while several others sustained injuries.
“One of us was shot directly on his chest with many other policemen injured. The issue has generated to riot as we are talking. We have as well called for backup,” he added.

The incident occurred barely hours after the conclusion of the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, which saw heavy deployment of security personnel.
Naijaonpoint reports that about 45,000 police officers were deployed to maintain order during the exercise.
The election was won by the incumbent governor, Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who secured 422,664 votes.
His closest challenger, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 99,445 votes, while Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) came third with 37,753 votes.
John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished with 8,208 votes.
Following the shooting, a riot reportedly broke out as policemen mobilised reinforcements to the scene.
As of press time, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Police High Command had issued an official statement on the clash.
