The music world was left reeling as acclaimed rapper Ghetts pleaded guilty to causing the death of a young student in a devastating hit-and-run.

The award-winning star, known offstage as Justin Clarke Samuel, appeared by video link from Pentonville prison as he admitted to the shocking charges at the Old Bailey in London.

The 41-year-old artist confessed to causing the death of 20-year-old Nepali student Yubin Tamang on October 18 after driving his BMW M5 dangerously on the streets of London. He also pleaded guilty to a separate charge tied to dangerous driving before the fatal collision.

The judge reportedly told the rapper in court that a custodial sentence was the only outcome.

Ghetts has already been disqualified from driving, although the duration of the ban has yet to be decided.

His sentencing is set for February 12.

Ghetts, one of Britain’s most respected and influential rap voices, had been experiencing a high point in his career. His fourth studio album, On Purpose, with Purpose, earned him a 2024 Mercury Prize nomination. He previously won Best Male Act at the 2021 Mobo Awards and collaborated with global stars including Ed Sheeran.
