Broom traders in Enugu State are recording massive profits as demand for the commodity has skyrocketed following Governor Peter Mbah’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naijaonpoint understands that Mbah, alongside his appointees, officially dumped the PDP after an extended cabinet meeting on Monday at the Government House, Enugu.
A video shared by the governor’s media aide, Dan Nwomeh, confirmed the switch, showing officials waving APC flags and chanting praises of President Bola Tinubu and Mbah.
In the video, they chorused, “We are now in APC, Tomorrow is here; it is APC all the way; it is Jagaban all the way.”
The defection has triggered a broom rush across Enugu markets, as the broom, official symbol of the APC, is used at rallies, registration drives, and defection ceremonies.
A correspondent of Leadership Newspaper who visited major markets reported a scarcity of the commodity, with new entrants joining the business to meet soaring demand.
One trader, Obinna Maduagwu, said business had been booming since news of the governor’s defection broke.
“Honestly, since the rumour started, we have been experiencing a boom in our business. I have been doing supply, and I have been making serious money, I must confess. Many people have joined the business, and all of us are making serious money. I want more people to join the APC so that we will make more money,” he said.
At Kenyatta Market, Mrs Ifeoma Obigeri said both her old and new stock sold out after a rush by defecting PDP members.
“Peter Mbah’s defection has blessed broom sellers at Kenyatta Market and other markets. My new and old stock finished this morning when some PDP members came to clear everything,” she said.
Similarly, Miss Ifeoma Ngene from Amokwe, Udi Market, revealed that her entire stock was bought off by members of the APC women’s wing.
“They cleared all my brooms on Friday and even told me to buy more for them,” she said.
At Artisan Market, another trader, Mrs Grace Okeke, expressed delight over the sales boom.
“How I wish this kind of political event would be happening in Enugu daily. As I speak with you, I don’t have a single broom left because the APC people came to clear everything for tomorrow’s event,” she stated.
With Mbah’s defection, the APC now controls three of the five Southeast states, while the Labour Party and APGA hold one each. The PDP, once dominant in the region, has been left without a state.
