After years of work on multiple iterations of the source material, Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR movie looks to be coming together, per a new update from Justin Lin. The comic book franchise, created by the John Wick vet, first launched in March 2021, with Netflix coming aboard around the same time to begin developing both a live-action movie and anime series as a sequel to the film.
Mattson Tomlin eventually came on board the film in October 2021 to pen the script, and later the anime series as its showrunner in 2024, though development has moved slowly as he found himself busy both with creating Netflix’s Terminator Zero and co-writing The Batman Part II with Matt Reeves. A couple of BRZRKR drafts have been completed since, with Fast & Furious franchise vet Justin Lin signing on in March 2025 to direct.
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley to discuss Last Days, Lin offered an encouraging update on the BRZRKR movie’s development. The director assured that he, Reeves and Tomlin “have been working together” to hone in on the final vision for the film, finding himself “very fortunate to be invited” to be a part of “Keanu’s creation“:
I can tell you that I am at a point in my career right now where time and efficiency is driving all my decisions and the people that I want to work with, and that’s one of my favorite projects.
Lin went on to describe his experience getting to know Reeves as being unlike anything he’s had before, given he’s “coming in and joining someone on a journey that is their creation“. The filmmaker went on to assure the goal is to “honor [the comic] in its spirit“ as he tries to determine the best path to “bring it to live-action“:
I would say that I’ve been very fortunate that, as I’m talking to you now, I get to work with these amazing people. I’m really looking forward to my next chapter as a filmmaker.
Even prior to his departure from Fast X over creative differences, Lin had already lined up a pretty full dance card of projects to develop. Among those included a live-action adaptation of One-Punch Man for Sony, which was last said to be undergoing rewrites from Rick and Morty‘s Dan Harmon and Heather Anne, as well as the action-adventure series Seven Wonders set to be led by Simu Liu, and the Charlize Theron and Daniel Craig-led heist thriller at Two for the Money at Apple.
While his new film served as a return to his indie roots, Last Days may also have been the ultimate push for BRZRKR to be the director’s next project, given it brought Lin and Reeves together prior to his signing on the comic adaptation. The filmmaker came just short of the finish line on financing the biographical drama before Reeves reached out to him and offered to help flesh out the budget as a silent partner, and with the pair having clearly connected with another creatively, that bodes well for their next collaboration.
Based on his comments, it’s not entirely clear what the timeline for BRZRKR‘s production actually is, especially since Tomlin is about to become busy with The Batman Part II‘s filming in Spring 2026, and will likely need to be on its set for any needed changes. However, with most of Reeves’ upcoming projects in post-production or in an elongated state of development, particularly Constantine 2, Lin and Reeves may be able to hit the ground running sooner than later.
