Nigerians have continued to react to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Sunday at the age of 82.
A human rights activist, Mr Malachy Ugwummadu, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that Buhari carried himself with dignity and comportment befitting of a president all through his tenure.
Ugwummadu, a lawyer and former National President, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, said the former president came into office with strong public support and legitimacy.
He, however, said that Buhari did not meet some expectations of Nigerians.
“Buhari will be recorded in history as one who was well-intentioned but missed some opportunities.”
Ugwummadu noted that Buhari introduced social security programmes, but said that implementation of the programmes was not effective.
He said that in spite of some missed opportunities, Buhari conducted himself with statesmanship.
“He carried on to the end with grace, dignity and the kind of comportment befitting of a president,” he said.
Mr Ige Asemudara, also a lawyer, described Buhari’s death as sad.
“It is very sad that we lost a Nigerian, a retired general and a former president. I condole with his family and political associates,” he said.
He said that Buhari had a lot of achievements as well as areas where his leadership was called to question.
He said that firmness characterised Buhari’s anti-corruption stance especially during his military regime.
