According To Our Reporter, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has promised to commercialise traditional Akwete cloth production, following a heartfelt discussion with late President Muhammadu Buhari before his passing.

Speaking at a state event in Umuahia, Otti revealed Buhari’s deep belief in Akwete’s economic potential and pledged to transform this cultural craft into a thriving industry.

Residents in Aba, where weaving is mainly done by women, say the craft struggles against modern fabric demand. Otti’s plan includes ₦200 million investment for machinery, skills training, and partnerships to boost production, create jobs, and expand exports.

Workshops will kick off next month in Aba and Umuahia, aiming to preserve heritage while empowering local economies through this iconic Nigerian fabric. Watch full report
