SUPER Eagles stars Victor Osimhen and Stanley Nwabali have scored nominations for the 2025 CAF Awards.
The nominations in the men’s categories were announced by the Confederation of African Football on their social media channels today, with the Super Eagles of Nigeria and their coach Eric Chelle snubbed.
Galatasaray striker Osimhen, who won the top prize in 2023, is one of 10 nominees for the African Men’s Player of the Year, vying with fellow big stars like Mohamed Salah of Egypt and Liverpool and Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco.
Other nominees for the biggest prize include Serhou Guirassy of Guinea and Borussia Dortmund, Pape Mate Sarr of Senegal and Tottenham Hotspur and Frank Anguissa of Cameroon and Napoli.
Chippa United star Nwabali is up for the Goalkeeper of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
Nwabali is nominated along with Andre Onana of Cameroon and Trabzonspor, Morocco’s Yassine Bounou ‘Bono’ and Ronwen Williams of South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as six others.
Understandably, the Super Eagles are not in the running for the National Team of the Year, which is dominated by 2026 World Cup-bound teams and the Morocco U-20s, who won the FIFA U-20 World Cup over the weekend.
There is a third Nigerian nominee, with Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi named on the Young Player of the Year shortlist.
Super Eagles head coach Chelle is not among the 10 nominees for Coach of the Year, which includes Morocco’s Walid Regragui and Pedro Leitão Brito ‘Bubista’, who has led Cape Verde to qualify for their first-ever World Cup.
The nomination lists will be shortened before the award ceremony.
