The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into what it described as “unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials” of Algeria’s national team following their defeat to Nigeria.
Recall that Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams scored as Nigeria dominated the match, while Algeria did not register a shot until the 80th minute.
Despite Nigeria’s commanding performance, the Algerian side appeared to blame Issa Sy, the Senegalese referee, and his officials for their loss.
After the final whistle, Algerian players confronted the match officials, and the confrontation escalated into a large on-field brawl that involved some Nigerian players.
The referees had to be escorted off the pitch by a team of officials to shield them from the anger of the Algerian squad.
The altercation extended into the dugout, where a few Algerian players were seen pushing and punching as they approached the match officials.
In a statement on Monday, CAF said the matter had been referred to its disciplinary board and that “appropriate action will be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing”.
The confederation added that the quarter-final match between Cameroon and Morocco would also be examined for any misconduct by players or officials.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” the statement reads.
“Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
CAF further said it would review footage of an alleged incident involving members of the media who misbehaved in the mixed zone area.
