The new Captain America series is about to have massive implications for the Marvel Universe, says author Chip Zdarsky. The writer teased that his series’ next arc will take place in the aftermath of Marvel’s current One World Under Doom crossover, and by the end of it, nothing will be the same.

Speaking with AIPT to promote the release of Captain America #4, Zdarsky spoke at length about the series so far, but he also hinted at what’s in store.

According to the author, by early next year, “the future of the Marvel Universe” will hinge on what happens in his Captain America book.

The latest volume of Captain America is nearing the conclusion of its first arc, and author Chip Zdarsky is already teasing the massive reverberations that are in store at the end of the second arc. The five-issue debut storyline is set in the mid-2000s, and offers a new canonical take on Captain America’s first confrontation with Latverian dictator Doctor Doom.

History won’t repeat in the series’ next arc, starting with Captain America #6, but it will rhyme, as Steve Rogers heads back to Latveria in the wake of the consequential One World Under Doom story arc. And apparently, according to Chip Zdarsky, the end of the second arc will be a gamechanger.

As the author put it:

The next arc is definitely about Doom’s shadow, set in the current day and the fallout from One World Under Doom. There’s some déjà vu happening and Steve has to make some hard decisions against some big enemies. After that, he really gets thrown out of his comfort zone. By the end of the second arc, we set the stage for the future of the Marvel Universe. Everything spins out of this.

That is a bold shot to call for Zdarsky, especially considering this Captain America series has so far felt distinct from the modern Marvel Universe. Immediately, this prompted fans to start wondering about how Captain America could “set the stage” for Marvel’s next big paradigm shift.

Marvel hasn’t solicited beyond Captain America #6, meaning there aren’t any hints, as of now, as to what Chip Zdarsky could be alluding to when he says the book will “set the stage for the future of the Marvel Universe.” However, the implication of Zdarsky’s comments is that Captain America will be at the heart of it all.

Marvel promised that One World Under Doom would have significant repercussions for the Marvel Universe moving forward, and now author Chip Zdarsky has alluded to something big on the horizon as well. He has offered an amazing incentive for readers to stick with his Captain America series, if the high quality of the book wasn’t enough for them already.

That is, the escalating drama of Captain America #4 already has fans on the edge of their seats waiting for the finale of the book’s first arc, and now it is clear that Marvel has something huge in store for the book in a few months, which will pull Captain America out of the past and make him pivotal to the future once more.

Captain America #4 is available now from Marvel Comics.
