Surpassing icons like Hulk and Thor, another MCU Avenger is now officially Marvel’s most powerful hero, with the publisher revealing how they claimed their immense new station.
Marvel Reveals Captain Marvel’s Origin as the New Phoenix
The hero in question is Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel, reborn with the beyond-godlike powers of the Phoenix Force. In today’s Binary #2 – from Stephanie Phillips, Giada Belviso, Rachelle Rosenberg and Travis Lanham – fans learn the full details of how Carol went from A-list powerhouse to the single most powerful being in existence.
The comic reveals that Jean Grey sacrificed herself to create a barrier around the Earth, stopping the lethal X-Virus from spreading out into the galaxy. With Carol Danvers by her side, Jean passed on the power of the Phoenix Force, with Carol adopting her Binary form in order to contain the near infinite power.
While Captain Marvel isn’t as skilled in her powers as Jean Grey (yet), this issue reveals that she soon will be. That’s because Jean still exists within the Phoenix Force, able to advise Binary on wielding the power to alter reality on a whim. Sadly, their reunion is interrupted by Jean’s clone Madelyne Pryor, who arrives with her own designs on the Phoenix Force.
Our Take on Carol Danvers’ Role as Binary
Carol Danvers’ transformation into Binary comes as part of the Age of Revelation event, jumping ahead ten years in Marvel’s timeline. In an America conquered by the villainous Revelation, Binary has been protecting a small community while attempting to master her full potential as the Phoenix’s latest host.
Now, fans know how and why Jean chose her as her successor – like many heroes in the Age of Revelation, Carol was a fitting inheritor who happened to be there when Jean died (a similar succession happened between Captain America and Dani Moonstar.)
However, the Phoenix is done being a small fry, urging Binary to unleash her full cosmic power right at the moment that Madelyne turns up with her own claim on the cosmic force.
The Age of Revelation has reordered the Marvel Universe in some shocking ways, including handing the Phoenix Force to a new host that nobody expected would ever wield absolute control of reality. But having become the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe, can Carol Danvers keep ahold of her newfound godhood, or will the ultimate force of change and rebirth choose a new host more willing to unleash its full potential?
