Cesar Duran teases the MLW Underground takeover, the return of Lucha Underground, and more

MLW is on its way to the War Chamber, though that’s not the only thing MLW fans are interested in. Those who have been watching MLW are always keen to keep an eye out for César Duran, who has been moving behind the scenes since his return to the company. Two weeks ago Duran was kidnapped by two masked peopleAnd now his allies are trying to find him. Some of these allies were fan favorites back in their Lucha Underground days like John Hennigan and Taya Valkyrie, and before he was moved, Duran had big plans. Before all of this, ComicBook.com had the chance to talk to Duran about his plans and time in MLW so far as well as the Lucha Underground reunion, and he wants everyone to know he’s just getting started.

“It’s just the beginning. I’m bringing them all in. They all called when I joined MLW, they all called and were keeping the options open. Even the people who are in WWE, I’d bring them all back. That’s what’s going to happen,” Doran said.

I mean, it’s amazing because I know them. I know them, we spend so much time together that not only do I know them personally, I know their style when they fight. MLW is basically doing it, it’s going to be on another level now with all these thoughts running through my mind. Slowly, but it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen,” Doran said.

Since joining MLW, Doran has also begun working with some of the newer faces in the company, including the talented Sam Adonis. Adonis had a big start internationally in Mexico, but hasn’t had as much exposure in the US, and Duran feels MLW is the perfect platform for him to rise. However, Duran also has another name he’d like to add to his growing faction.

“Well, he’s done really well with AAA. He’s still doing it in Mexico, and he’s willing to do pretty crazy things. So when he came over and we chatted about the future… an asset to what I want to do,” Duran said. He had it, he was like, ‘Wow, I think we can do something together about this,’ so I was really excited when he signed. Now I need Microman. This for me is who I want my promotion. It took a while to convince him, but let’s see what happens.”

Duran is also excited about what MLW is doing as a wrestling company and the huge strides they’ve made in such a small time frame. MLW’s future is bright and Doran commends MLW CEO Court Bauer for making great strides to move the company forward, and the list is fully invested in moving things forward.

“What excites me is the list they have currently and the plans they have for the future, how actively they are, how aggressively they try to implement those plans,” Doran said. Court Bauer has a very clear idea of what he wants to do with it, and I think he’ll be very successful because he’s doing the right things. Also, because I get this group of fighters from Lucha Underground and they bring a different style of fighting, and we have the potential to do pretty crazy things, And these people are up for it. They’re crazy enough to do real things that will make the audience never forget what they just saw. That’s what I’m looking forward to. Things that will create such a stamp, such an imprint on the audience’s view that they’ll never forget for the rest of their lives. That’s what I aim for it.”

2023 is off to a great start for Duran, but he has bigger ambitions, and part of that is bringing in some of his favorites from Lucha Underground. “Yeah, yeah. I’m very close and you’ll see that. I’m very close to bringing back three of the main players from Lucha Underground and a fourth, which is going to be a surprise. He wasn’t on the roster, but he showed up in Lucha Underground which is a big surprise.” As for his year-end ambitions, Duran said “Well, pretty simple. For a list of amazing fighters that I take over, it’s no more MLW Underground than MLW Underground, but this is Duran’s MLW Underground. There’s a takeover, no doubt about it.”

MLW Underground airs on REELZ every Tuesday at 10 p.m. MLW War Chamber takes place at Melrose Ballroom in New York City on April 6.
