Many, many people have commented on the Chris Rock/Will Smith slap. What was a relatively minor incident has been blown up into a massive thing both because it’s something all Americans can talk and bicker about without risking the cancel culture that comes with discussing politics in the Trump era and because of the various intricacies of the Will Smith/Jada Smith situation.
Thus, many articles have been written on the slap and the fallout resulting from it, the Academy felt pressed to respond by banning Will Smith for 10 years, and many celebrities have shared their views on the subject of what happened and who was in the right.
However, one person who hasn’t really talked about the incident is Chris Rock. Other than his comments immediately after the slap, during which he looked to be almost in shock because of how surprised he was by the whole situation, he hasn’t really talked about what happened.
He finally dropped a hint as to why during a recent performance, however, as was reported by the Desert Sun, which said:
Fans of comedian Chris Rock who hoped he’d share his thoughts about being slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars during his show at Fantasy Springs on Friday night were disappointed as soon as he took the stage.
“I’m OK, I have a whole show and I’m not talking about that until I get paid. Life is good. I got my hearing back,” Rock said.
But he did skewer some celebrities and politicians during his set, including Hillary Clinton and her failure to win the presidency in 2008 and 2016, the Kardashians and how they “love Black people so much they take anyone in,” and Meghan Markle’s accusations of racism in the British royal family.
Rock also supposedly attacked woke corporations during the performance, so while fans might have been disappointed that he didn’t discuss the Will Smith incident he still did make fun of the cancel culture situation and general nonsense happening across America right now.
Cell phones were not allowed in the building and guests were given lock pouches for their phones, so no audio or video of the performance is available yet.
What exactly Rock meant by “until I get paid” is unclear. On one hand, he already is “getting paid” for the incident in one respect: sales of his tickets have shot up to even higher heights in the days after the incident, as Breitbart reported, saying:
Following the attack, Rock’s comedy tour saw a surge in ticket sales, which also caused ticket prices to rise since the night of the Oscars, going up from a minimum of $46 per ticket on March 18 to a minimum of $341.
The more likely explanation, however, is that though Rock didn’t press charges against Smith for the incident he does plan on suing Smith and “getting paid” via a lawsuit. Any details on that are not yet available, however, so for now it’s just speculation.
