A communal clash in Abuja has left a farmer dead and another critically injured after an alleged machete attack by a herder.

The incident occurred in Kowa Yarda Village, Karshi, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), following a dispute over cattle entering farmland.

The confrontation happened at about 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, after security personnel received a distress call about the clash.

Troops of the 177 Guards Battalion and police officers from the Karshi patrol base responded to the emergency and moved into the community.

Preliminary findings indicated that two farmers had attempted to stop a herder from allowing his cattle onto their farmland when the confrontation turned violent.

The herder allegedly attacked both farmers with a machete. One of the victims died from his injuries, while the other was seriously wounded.

The surviving farmer was evacuated to Karshi General Hospital, where he was taken for medical treatment.

However, tensions escalated after the attack, with residents reportedly launching retaliatory attacks against Fulani members of the community.

Several houses were destroyed during the retaliation. Security personnel said no further deaths were recorded in the ensuing violence.

To prevent the situation from deteriorating further, troops engaged the deceased farmer’s family, youth leaders and local vigilantes.

They urged the groups to remain calm and avoid retaliatory actions that could deepen the conflict.

In another intervention, security personnel rescued a Fulani vigilante who had allegedly been detained by youths in the Ara Sabo area.

The vigilante was later transferred to the Vigilante Headquarters in Ara Sabo for further action.

Security personnel have remained in the area as efforts continue to prevent fresh violence and restore peace in the community.
