A devastating flash flood has wreaked havoc in Kebbi State, destroying two bridges, several homes, and vast farmlands in Dandi and Suru Local Government Areas.
Naijaonpoint understands that the disaster, which struck on Thursday, washed away a bridge in Fana township and another linking the Dakingari-Kyangakwai road, cutting off movement and crippling farming communities.
On Saturday, the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, led a government delegation on a sympathy visit to affected villages in Dandi, Suru, and Argungu LGAs.
Extending condolences to victims in Fana, Aljannare, and Kampani, Tafida announced the immediate release of ₦70 million and hundreds of bags of rice as emergency relief.
“We share in your pain. This tragedy is an act of God, and we pray for His protection against future disasters,” Tafida said.
He assured residents that the government would reconstruct the collapsed bridges to restore access to affected areas.
According to him, the state government approved:
- ₦50 million and 600 bags of rice for victims in Fana, Maigwaza, and Tungar Beddi (Dandi LGA)
- ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice for residents of Aljannare (Suru LGA)
- ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice for victims in Kampani (Argungu LGA)
He also visited the Kampani IDP camp in Argungu, where he announced an additional ₦10m and 250 bags of rice for displaced persons.
Tafida urged communities in flood-prone, riverine areas to relocate to safer grounds for their safety.
The Chairman of Dandi, Mansur Isah, confirmed that one person lost their life, while many houses and farms were destroyed.
Similarly, the member representing Dandi Constituency, Sulaiman Abubakar, lamented that hundreds of farms were submerged, leaving families without food or income.
The Chairman of Suru LGA, Muhammad Suru, also thanked Governor Nasir Idris’s administration for its timely response.
At the Argungu Emirate, the Emir, Alhaji Sama’ila Mera, commended the state government for its swift intervention and pledged the emirate’s continued support for relief and recovery efforts.
“This assistance will bring immediate relief to victims. We appreciate the government’s commitment to rebuilding lives and communities,” he said.
