The Ebem Ohafia community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State has announced a ban on the sale of cooking gas (LPG) in its market to prevent potential deaths and calamities.
Naijaonpoint understands that the decision was made following an emergency meeting of the Council of Chiefs and Elders, and was formalised in a communique issued by the Ebem Ujurueze Palace, Ekeleugo Ebem.
In a communiqué, signed by the paramount ruler of Ebem Ohafia, Ezie Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, and other community leaders, it was stated that the ban was an outright measure aimed at addressing growing safety concerns.
In addition to the cooking gas ban, the community leaders condemned various social vices, including cultism, gangsterism, and drug abuse.
These activities were deemed unacceptable, and the leaders have declared them illegal in the community with immediate effect.
The leaders urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children and wards. They also directed landlords whose properties were being used for these illicit activities to evict the offenders or face disciplinary actions.
“Anyone found in unlawful possession of arms will be handed over to law enforcement agencies,” the communique read.
Further tightening security, the leaders issued a two-week quit notice to all scrap dealers operating in the community. Failure to comply will result in stringent disciplinary measures.
The leaders linked the ban to rising reports of vandalism and the breaking into properties, which security reports have connected to the activities of scrap dealers and their suppliers.
