Marjorie Taylor Greene Wants Joe Biden to Bounce: Once Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene gets her radar locked in on a target, she refuses to let go. This time she has it in for President Joe Biden.
It’s time to impeach the man in the White House, according to Greene.
There are two big reasons for this drastic action.
She thinks Biden has failed to secure the Southern Border where illegal immigrants are flowing in, and she thinks the president needs to go because of the classified document scandal.
But can it actually happen?
Greene Was Busy in 2021…Going After Joe Biden
During the last Congress in 2021, Greene filed a resolution to impeach President Biden for his “dereliction of duty” during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
She filed two other impeachment resolutions against Biden in 2021 for violation of immigration law and for “usurping the Constitutional balance of power.”
She Wants to Remove the Head of the Homeland Security Department
So far, in the current Congress, she has co-sponsored another resolution to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for abdicating his duties to the Constitution and for “reckless abandonment of border security and immigration enforcement.”
Border Failures in Biden’s Administration
Greene also wants Biden to be impeached because of the border crisis.
She wrote on Truth Social in early January that “Joe Biden has failed the American People and Border Patrol Agents. The border is the most dangerous crisis in America and fentanyl is killing Americans every day. Impeach Joe Biden and Secretary Mayorkas!”
Greene also told C-SPAN that Biden should be impeached over his mishandling of classified documents. “I’ll echo again, she said. “Impeach Biden and that’s what we need to do.”
Some House Republicans, Including the Speaker, Are Not Ready to Go There
Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has been noncommittal about the impeachment process against Biden.
Moderate House members are also not ready to take this step.
Representative Don Bacon from Nebraska told Politico that independents and swing voters in his and other districts do not want the president to be impeached.
Non-starter in the Senate
Senators such as John Thune from South Dakota and John Cornyn of Texas also do not support impeachment for the classified document scandal.
Greene and others would need all Republican senators to be on board, plus a number of Democrats, as a two-thirds majority is needed to convict and remove the president if he were to be impeached in the House.
Exercise in Futility
So, Greene efforts to impeach Biden are symbolic at this point. The Speaker does not support it, so impeachment resolutions will likely get stuck in the Judiciary Committee. Moderates are skeptical, and there are not enough Republicans in the Senate to convict.
Is This Really Impeachable?
Also, Biden’s actions do not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors. While secret documents have been found, Biden has cooperated with investigators. He even allowed the FBI to search his beach home in Delaware and they found no classified papers.
So far, there are no signs of criminal intent, conspiracy to conduct a crime, or obstruction of justice – wrongdoing that would be subject to an impeachment process.
Impeachment Not Meant for Political Differences
The founders never intended impeachment to be “tit for tat” for partisan political reasons or for policy differences.
Greene disagrees with Biden policies, which is her right, but threatening impeachment as a weapon to punish a president of another party is not what the framers of the Constitution had in mind.
The House Oversight Committee can and probably will conduct their own investigation about the classified papers scandal. They could find more evidence that Biden attempted to cover up or otherwise criminally intend to break the law, but the best the House Republicans would hope for would be to accuse Biden with “gross negligence” for placing classified documents outside of the official chain of custody at the National Archives. It would be difficult for gross negligence without criminal intent to rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors.
Expect Greene to keep banging the drum for impeachment. It is clear she hates Biden, but the best way to remove the president is to vote him out of office in 2024.
