A Wuse Magistrates’ Court in Abuja has sentenced a laundryman identified as Livinus Stephen, to 10 months in prison for stealing $6,000(N8.5M) and two mobile phones from his employer.
Stephen pleaded guilty to the offence of theft by a servant.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mr Samuel Emmanuel, told the court that the complainant, Mohammed Sada, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on December 24, 2025.
He said Stephen, who was employed as a laundryman, committed the offence in October 2025, stealing $6,000, a Samsung phone valued at N350,000, and an iPhone worth N500,000, alongside clothes and jewellery.
Emmanuel added that although the stolen items were recovered after Stephen’s arrest, efforts to recover the cash were unsuccessful.
The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened Section 289 of the Penal Code.
Delivering judgment, Magistrate Farida Ibrahim sentenced Stephen to 10 months’ imprisonment without an option of a fine and ordered the sentence to run concurrently.
She also warned the convict to desist from criminal activities and maintain good behaviour.
Stephen, however, pleaded with the court to “temper justice with mercy.”
