Justice Rahmon Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court has ordered the remand of an accountant, Oguibe Promise Nwachukwu, at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly stealing about ₦200 million belonging to his former employer, Travelstar Web Logistics Limited.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed this in a statement shared via its official Facebook page on Monday.
According to the anti-graft agency, Nwachukwu and his company, Wifamapp Royalty Global Limited, were arraigned on a 13-count charge bordering on stealing, conversion, and criminal breach of trust.
Naijaonpoint reports that the EFCC alleged that between 2018 and 2020, the defendant dishonestly converted company funds for personal use.
In one of the counts, Nwachukwu was accused of converting $36,000 (approximately ₦54 million) entrusted to him as an accountant in 2020, while another count alleged that between January and July 2018, he also converted $156,000 (about ₦234 million) belonging to the same company.
The EFCC statement partly read, “That you, Oguibe Promise Nwachukwu, being the alter ego of Wifamapp Royalty Global Limited, sometime in March 2020 in Lagos, dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of $36,000, property of Travelstar Web Logistics Limited, entrusted to you as its accountant, thereby committing an offence of stealing contrary to Section 280(1)(b) and (2)(f) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The agency further alleged that the defendant repeated a similar act between January and July 2018, converting $156,000 belonging to the same company, in violation of the same law.
When the charges were read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all 13 counts.
Following his plea, the EFCC’s counsel, A.A. Usman, prayed the court for a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in the EFCC’s custody pending trial.
However, defence counsel, Kelvin C. Uzozie, informed the court that a bail application had already been filed and requested that his client be remanded in EFCC custody instead of a correctional facility.
After hearing both parties, Justice Oshodi adjourned the case till October 17, 2025, for the hearing of the bail application.
He further ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos pending the determination of his bail application.
“The defendant shall remain in custody until the bail hearing is decided,” the judge ruled.
