The Nigeria Customs Service, under its special task force, Operation Whirlwind, has intercepted petroleum products valued at ₦181.6 million in just eight weeks along smuggling routes between Nigeria and Cameroon.
Naijaonpoint reports that the development was disclosed by the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, ACG Kolapo Oladeji, during a press briefing held on Thursday in Yola.
“This operation is geared towards energy and food security to foster economic growth in line with the core mandates of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu,” Oladeji stated.
Oladeji explained that the seizures were made during 55 operations targeting smuggling flashpoints across Adamawa State.
“Operation Whirlwind Zone D has repositioned all its machinery across its areas of responsibility, ensuring that the border becomes airtight,” he said.
He warned smugglers to desist from their criminal activities and appealed for stakeholder cooperation to promote the socioeconomic development of the region.
“We will ensure that the supply chains of these economic wreckers are truncated in accordance with enabling laws,” he vowed.
He added that the seized petroleum products would be auctioned, with proceeds returned to the government.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Legal Adviser at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, Mrs Abidemi Adewumi-Aluko, described the planned auction as a legitimate move to reclaim national resources and prevent economic sabotage.
“Such offences attract life imprisonment because they threaten national security,” she noted.
She also called on fuel smugglers to stop their activities, warning of serious legal consequences.
