Though he’s returned to characters in the past, such as with the James Bond franchise, Daniel Craig says the upcoming “Knives Out” sequel “Glass Onion” offered a different kind of pressure and challenge.
Craig returns as Southern detective Benoit Blanc in the second of at least three contemporary whodunnit murder mysteries from filmmaker Rian Johnson. After the first one scored critical acclaim, over $300 million at the box-office and an Oscar-nominated screenplay, anticipation for the follow-up is high.
Speaking with Empire to promote the film’s release, Craig says they are aiming to match the quality of the first film but had to do it in a way that didn’t become “a pastiche of itself”:
“I’ve spent the past 15 years of my life trying to do that in a franchise, so I’m not afraid of it. If you’ve got the right people in the room and the right talent, then you can do it. Rian’s a genius writer and doesn’t want to repeat [himself]. Neither do we want to let people down; we want audiences to enjoy the world that we created in the first one and believe in this one.”
Dave Bautista, Madelyn Cline, Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monae, and Leslie Odom Jr. co-star in “Glass Onion” which will play the Fall film festival circuit ahead of a December 23rd premiere on Netflix.
