Anemone is now available on video-on-demand. Though Daniel Day-Lewis retired from acting in 2017 after Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, the three-time Oscar winner (My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, Lincoln) recently returned in the new movie Anemone, directed by his son Ronan Day-Lewis. It was released in limited theaters on October 3 before expanding a week later on October 10.

Now, Anemone is already available on VOD, including on Prime Video and other major platforms, to rent for $19.99 and buy for $24.99. The film is from Focus Features, a subsidiary of Universal, meaning it should eventually be available for streaming on Peacock.

Directed by Ronan Day-Lewis in his feature debut, who co-wrote the script with his father Daniel Day-Lewis, Anemone follows a man who embarks on a journey into the woods in Northern England to reunite with his reclusive brother, a hermit with whom he shares a complicated past shaped by life-altering events from decades earlier.

In addition to Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead role, the cast also includes Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones), two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton (Sweet and Lowdown, In America), Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green.

Premiered at the New York Film Festival in September 2025, Anemone received mixed reviews from critics, resulting in a 56% Rotten Tomatoes score. Though critics praised the film for bringing Daniel Day-Lewis back to the big screen with his signature intensity fully intact, Anemone works better as a display of its star’s enduring charisma and debut director Ronan Day-Lewis’s visual flair than as a fully unified drama.

Despite much hype about Daniel Day-Lewis’ return to acting after eight years, Anemone also failed to bring audiences out to theaters, making only about $1 million at the box office. However, it does enjoy a slightly better 60% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, only 18 days after it was first released in theaters, Anemone has arrived on VOD.

From the start, Anemone was a tough sell without strong critical support, and those glowing reviews never materialized. Still, there’s a small silver lining in the failure – if Anemone reignites Day-Lewis’s passion for acting, then perhaps the flop was worth it.
