The Dark Souls trilogy of video games, released between 2011 and 2016, is held in high regard by legions of fans, who consider it one of the pinnacles of fantasy action gaming. For nearly a decade, fans have wished for a continuation of the game series, but the next best thing is the continued expansion of the Dark Souls world in other mediums.

Comics are perfectly suited for continuing the expansive story of Dark Souls and immersing fans in its grim fantasy setting. Titan Comics has put out several exciting companion comics to the games over the past ten years, starting with a tie-in to Dark Souls III. Mother of Mourning is Titan’s latest offering to Dark Souls fans.

The teaser synopsis for the series reads:

Hope is a fleeting feeling for the Knights of Mourning. But the knightly order is willing to bet everything on their last chance of salvation.

In search of a hero to rekindle the flame, these knights turn to the Mother of Lillies, a soulless mummified saint with legends about her ability to restore balance to the world.

The knights believe that her lost soul will resurrect her and bring them their soughtafter champion to guide them to solace. But madness looms in every knight’s mind and this long-awaited goal might not be what it once seemed…

In other words, it seems the “Knights of Mourning” are going to awaken something they can’t contain, unleashing unexpected horrors that not all of them will survive their encounter with. Still, that is only speculation, and Mother of Mourning’s plot remains tightly under wraps for now.

In any case, the premise of the series is rich with potential for Dark Souls‘ trademark horror-action.

As beloved as the Dark Souls franchise is, it is surprising that it hasn’t expanded beyond the games more. A live-action adaptation seems inevitable, though devoted fans of the game remain skeptical of the possibility. An animated series would also be suitable, but comics offer a true wide-open palette of opportunities for Dark Souls to
