David Arquette On Reuniting With Kevin Williamson For Scream 7

David Arquette talks about his return to Scream 7, teasing his reunion with original Scream franchise writer and now director Kevin Williamson. Scream 7 will mark Williamson’s first time directing an entry in the slasher franchise after writing the 1996 horror classic and its sequels, Scream 2 and Scream 4.

Arquette played Dewey Riley in all Scream movies until the 2022 legacy sequel, in which he died after being stabbed by Ghostface. Despite his gruesome death, Dewey is confirmed to return to Scream 7.

In an interview with Men’s Journal, Arquette said that working with Williamson again felt like coming full circle, and revealed that the chance of working with Williamson again was a deciding factor in his return as Dewey in the upcoming sequel. Read his comments below:

I was really excited to work with Kevin Williamson again. I mean, he’s the writer of Scream, and he’s directing this one. It’s a really great 360 moment. I can’t really say too much about the movie, but I was really excited to work with Kevin. We’ve had such a history, and he wrote the original and created this entire world, and he just knows it better than anyone.

Arquette’s comments come as the Scream franchise prepares for a new era following the behind-the-scenes changes and shifting cast dynamics. Scream VI, the last entry in the series, earned an impressive $169 million worldwide, and currently holds the record for the highest-grossing domestic box office in the franchise, with $108 million. The film notably did not feature Arquette or Neve Campbell, who were absent due to contract and pay disputes.

With Williamson making his directorial debut and Scream 7 reportedly returning to the franchise’s roots, the cast is shaping up to be a major bid on nostalgia. The Scream 7 cast includes returning stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

New additions to the cast include Joel McHale as Sydney’s husband, Isabel May as Sydney’s daughter, with Celeste O’Connor, McKenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Asa Germann, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, and Jimmy Tatro as unknown characters. Scott Foley (who previously played Ghostface killer Roman Bridger in Scream 3) has also joined the cast in an unknown role.

There are some intriguing possibilities for the returning characters being the perfect Ghostface in Scream 7, but with plot details remaining under wraps, Williamson’s leadership and Arquette’s eagerness to return tease an exciting entry to the franchise, most likely centered on legacy characters and reflection rather than a complete revamp.

Scream 7 is set to release on Friday, February 27, 2026.
