David Corenswet Reveals The One Superman Disagreement He Had With James Gunn

David Corenswet shares a new moment from filming Superman, where he and DC director James Gunn had a disagreement during a pivotal scene of the story. The Man of Steel is finally back in his own franchise through the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate, as Gunn brought the DC legend back to the big screen this summer.

In their conversation on Variety’s Actors on Actors, Corenswet and Jonathan Bailey looked back at the moment when Superman and Lois Lane have their kiss as they fly up in the air. The DCU lead shared the following story with the British actor:

Bailey: I was like, “Oh, s–t” when I saw your kiss at the end [of “Superman”]. My favorite moment of chemistry is the chuckle.

Corenswet: James, when I was doing that chuckle when she says, “I love you too,” he came up to me and said, “It’s not working. It needs to be solemn.” I was like, “No! The whole point is, ‘I f—–g know that you love me.’” Credit to James. He was right on 90% of everything, but on that one, he saw that chuckle was a very truthful thing.

Bailey: That is what makes a leading man smash it out of the park.

Corenswet also got to ask Bailey about the experience he had with Cynthia Erivo, “You are carried by Cynthia. She’s levitating you. Every man out there would think there’s no way you can look masculine and powerful and in control when you’re being levitated by a woman.” He added, “And you, in that moment when she’s lifting you by your f—–g massive arms, maintained your masculinity. Well done, mate. Because it’s a lot easier when you’re carrying the girl.”

Bailey responded with, “I mean, listen, I’d be carried by both Cynthia and Ari for the rest of my life if I could be.”

The viral moment between Corenswet and James Gunn also got discussed, with the Superman lead sharing how grateful he was for that interaction being captured on camera.

The Superman movie ending may be the last time audience members have seen the DC icon for 2025, but DC Studios is already working on the next installment for Corenswet’s leading hero. The star is set to reprise the role for 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, alongside Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane.

Principal photography is reportedly set to begin in April 2026, with the two rivals being set to team up against DC’s Brainiac, who is reportedly going to be the main antagonist of the story. Frank Grillo is also set to return as Rick Flag Sr., while other DCU characters are expected to return, too.

Superman is available through home media release and is streaming on HBO Max.
