DC Transit Worker Killed Protecting Woman From Gunman: Report

According to police in Washington, DC, a brave employee of the city’s Metro transit system was slain on Wednesday while attempting to defend a woman from a shooter on a station platform. The shooting spree, which featured a “series of individual” gunshot incidents, also injured at least two other persons.

The Washington Post quotes Devin Jennings, 19, who claims that he was on a bus traveling from Maryland when he witnessed a man threatening to shoot a stranger-looking rider after telling him to put down his phone. As the bus approached the Potomac Avenue Station, according to Jennings, the passenger said “Yes, sir,” and then got off. According to Jennings, while the shooter pursued the man and fired at him, he reportedly added, “You’re secure right now. Today, I’m the killmonger.”

According to police, the man who was threatened on the bus was shot in the legs, according to NBC Washington. According to reports, the shooter first allegedly shot someone at a fee machine in the legs before moving to the platform, where two workers attempted to step in after he got into a fight with a woman there. “He is prowling the streets with a gun in his hand, randomly confronting individuals. He is obviously upset about something, “said Executive Assistant Chief of Police Ashan Benedict of the Metropolitan Police Department.

One employee, named as 64-year-old Robert Cunningham, a mechanic in the transportation agency’s power department, was shot and killed for attempting to assist, according to Benedict. Benedict said, “His gallantry must be acknowledged here today. He claimed that after the other worker was able to defuse the situation, the man was tackled by passengers as he attempted to board a train.

Police claimed the shooter’s firearm was recovered near the railroad tracks and he was brought into jail. Mayor Muriel Bowser stated, “At this time, we don’t know a lot about this shooter, other than the fact that we had a person with a gun who caused yet another tragedy in our city.
