The South-East Zonal Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Engr Chigozie Igwe, says the ruling All Progressives Congress is bent on killing opposition political parties in the country to enable its power-grabbing agenda.
Speaking with THE WHISTLER on Thursday, Engr Igwe said the recent defection of some bigwigs of PDP to APC does not reduce the strength of PDP, noting that political party membership is by volition.
He said, “PDP is a political party, and a free will organisation. People are free to move from one party to another. But people should rather be worried about why somebody should join APC. Is it because APC is doing well? We are all Nigerians and facing a challenge of a presidency trying to create a one-party state and killing our democracy.
“The judiciary is being strangulated. The legislature is strangulated. The opposition parties are being strangulated using the might of the federal government.
“What we are facing is semi-dictatorship in Nigeria. It is a challenge for all of us, and not just political parties. If
I decide to join APC tomorrow, does it change anything? What is important is our country.
“PDP is not in power. Obviously there is no money flowing in PDP. If Nigerians decide to decamp, maybe because they are being pressured, or intimidated, or they are looking for where to survive, so be it. Many more governors may decamp, but it doesn’t change anything. The philosophy of the party is still there. What the party did when they were in power is still there. PDP has programmes. I don’t know if you have seen any programmes of this government in areas of agriculture, education, security, science and technology. All you see is power grabbing.”
On the internal crisis rocking PDP, he said the matter would soon be resolved, adding that PDP remained formidable.
In his words, “The national assistant secretary has assumed office. Our governors have taken decisions. We shall organise our NEC in August. Everything is being resolved. Those leaving will regret. They also lack morality for leaving the party that they benefited immensely from. But the power lies with the Nigerian populace who will cast votes come 2027.”
