Political strategist and founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy, Prof. Udenta Udenta, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong and vibrant despite a wave of defections by some of its governors.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News on Tuesday, Udenta dismissed claims that the opposition party was collapsing, insisting that the defections only exposed the selfish ambitions of a few politicians disconnected from the people.
“The PDP is vibrant with life. Those leaving are the upper crust of the political elite governors who, for selfish reasons, have decided to join the APC, thinking that their gluttony will power their own ambition,” he said.
He accused the defecting governors of greed and gutlessness, saying their decisions were not driven by ideology or the will of the people.
“It’s an individual taking a walk out of the seat of chicken-headedness and gutlessness. Let’s call a spade a spade,” he stated.
Udenta added that the masses remained loyal to the PDP, particularly in states where governors had defected.
“In Enugu State, I can bet you the people are roiling with anger because you don’t take a walk from a party that gave you a massive mandate without consultation,” he said.
He argued that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was “gouging itself” through excesses and would soon suffer the consequences of internal overindulgence.
“Gluttony has consequences like flatlines and obesity. That’s why the APC is gouging itself at the end of the day from leaders who are gouged into their soul,” he said.
Udenta further described the forthcoming PDP national convention slated for November 16, 2025, as a crucial test for the party’s future, saying that if it is held successfully and the party remains compact, cohesive, and coherent, it would rebound aggressively.
According to him, the internal shake-ups would ultimately strengthen the PDP by purging it of uncommitted figures.
“It is even important that this burdensome load is shed now. Let the APC gobble up a few of these who have no anchorage with the people,” he noted.
He maintained that the PDP’s ideological depth and people-centered identity would ensure its survival and resurgence ahead of 2027.
“If former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to pick up the ticket of the party and the party grants him that choice, he will win the next election because people will rally around the banner,” Udenta said.
