CANDIDATES from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election held on Saturday, July 13th, 2024, emerged victorious in all 25 local government chairmanship positions.

According to the Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, Jerry Agbaike, one of the PDP candidate was declared winner without opposition.

The PDP candidates competed against candidates from other parties and emerged victorious  in 24 of the local government areas where elections took place.

However, there was no election held in the Udu Local Government Area, as the PDP candidate for chairmanship, Vincent Oyibode, won unopposed.

Furthermore, PDP candidates for councillorship won in 499 electoral wards across the state, with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) winning in electoral ward one of the Oshimili North Local Government Area.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is scheduled to give the oath of office to the 25 elected chairmen today, July 15, 2024.

The Delta state local government election marked the second election following a Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments and directing the Federal Government to directly allocate 20.60% of the monthly funds to the 774 LGs’ accounts instead of governors’ controlled accounts.

The court’s decision also prohibited governors from arbitrarily dissolving democratically elected local government councils.
