The Norwegian authorities have announced that starting from April 1, 2023, the country will start making deportation notifications in advance for those who have exceeded their departure deadline after having their asylum applications rejected.
According to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security of Norway, such a change will help the country to manage deportations better as well as keep track of those who need to leave the country within a set deadline, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
In line with the current rules that Norway has, foreigners who are in the country and receive a rejection for their asylum or residence application are given a deadline to leave. Those who miss the deadline are put on the list of people that need to be deported from the country and against which an entry ban applies.
For this reason, since currently, those whose applications have been rejected are notified of their deportation once the departure deadline has been exceeded, the authorities want to change such a rule and inform them much more in advance.
The decision of Norway to start issuing deportation notifications for people who have received a rejection for their asylum or residence application much earlier than before was taken following the launch of the renewed Schengen Information System (SIS).
“The fact that the provision can only be put into use now is due to the further development of the Schengen Information System (SIS) and ICT systems that can detect when an exit deadline has been missed, which was not in place when the provision was issued,” the statement of the Ministry reads.
The renewed SIS, which supports border controls as well as law enforcement cooperation between the Member States, went live in all European Union/Schengen Area countries, except for Cyprus, earlier this month.
The system, among many others, now will include DNA records for persons that are reported wanted or missing. It will also include new categories of alerts, biometrics, and a new tool to fight crime and terrorism.
Commenting on the launch of the renewed SIS, the EU Commission said that the system will be part of the most advanced and modern border management in the EU.
Apart from the SIS, which is already fully operational, the EU will soon introduce two other systems – the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).
The EES was expected to become effective in May of this year. However, the authorities have said that this will not be possible.
As for the ETIAS, the authorities have said that the system is expected to become effective next year.
