Jennifer Lawrence calls Die, My Love a form of revenge after failing to land a leading role in Twilight. The star previously revealed that she auditioned for the role of Bella in the hit YA romance adaptation, a part that ultimately went to Kristen Stewart.
In an interview with Variety at the Die My Love premiere, Lawrence is asked whether finally getting to work with Robert Pattinson feels like a full-circle moment given her Twilight history. “Yeah, it’s the total revenge that I’ve wanted,” the star jokes.
Directed by Lynne Ramsay, the psychological dramedy features Lawrence and Pattinson as Grace and Jackson, respectively, a couple who fall into a shared psychosis after Grace develops post-partum depression. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, marks Ramsay’s follow-up to You Were Never Really Here (2017).
For Lawrence, Die My Love is a return to the screen after No Hard Feelings (2023) and Causeway (2022). Pattinson, on the other hand, is coming off of the disappointing performance of Mickey 17 (2025) this past spring.
Lawrence revealed on The Rewatchables podcast in 2023 that she auditioned for Twilight. “They turned me down immediately,” she recalls. “I didn’t even get a callback.” This ended up being a blessing in disguise, of course, as Lawrence ended up landing the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games not long after.
Both Lawrence and Pattinson starred in four installments of a major YA franchise, and both have embraced somewhat similar career paths in the years since. Both have opted for a mix of smaller projects and superhero fare, with Lawrence having played Mystique in X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) and Pattinson taking on the Caped Crusader in The Batman (2022).
The response to Die My Love has thus far been positive from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film enjoys an 80% critics score, with Lawrence’s performance singled out as a major highlight. No Popcornmeter score is available just yet, but one should take shape following the film’s North American theatrical release on November 7.
In his Die My Love review for ScreenRant, Graeme Guttmann awards the film an eight out of 10. Guttmann praises Lawrence’s “earth-shattering” performance and Pattinson’s as co-lead, as well as the movie’s truly unique tonal balance. He writes:
Grace is the beating heart of this film, with Lawrence’s flashes of anger and violence balanced by the star’s subtle comedic timing in key scenes. It’s an uncomfortable laugh – nothing about Die, My Love is truly funny, even if there are scenes that feel designed to evoke an ironic sense of humor.
It remains to be seen how Die My Love will fare with general audiences, but it evidently marks another interesting project for Lawrence and for Pattinson. After a near miss with Twilight 17 years ago, the critical response suggests the pair’s only collaboration has been worth the wait.
