DJ Akademiks is not holding back about Young Thug’s newly previewed music after the rapper debuted an unreleased song during his Coachella set.
Reacting to the clip during a livestream, Akademiks said the track felt far from the Young Thug fans once knew.
“2015 Thuga, that n—a couldn’t miss if he tried,” Akademiks said. “This is almost feel like a troll song.” He later added, “I don’t know, this song sound a–. I’m gonna keep it a bean. This sounds bad.”
Akademiks said Young Thug’s music no longer has the same creativity and unpredictability that made him one of Atlanta’s biggest stars.
“Some of our favorite rappers, they’re now in their 30s,” he said. “The dumb music just doesn’t resonate the same. We’re like, where’s the growth?”
Ak then compared the new material to Thug’s older songs, saying the rapper once stood out because of his unusual melodies, strange lyrics and unexpected style.
“Thug always made eclectic cool music,” he said. “We used to think Thug was a weirdo because his mind was different.”
Akademiks went on to say that he still considers Young Thug one of Atlanta’s all-time greats.
“I got Thug on my Mount Rushmore of Atlanta,” he said. “You are one of the most creative.”
