DJI has unveiled the Osmo Action 5 Pro, an action camera that rivals the best GoPro has to offer. The rugged video recorder boasts 20-meter water resistance, a larger touchscreen, object tracking, and a lot more.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro gets upgraded hardware

Although there are several action camera manufacturers, Go Pro has been one of the leaders in the market. DJI appears to be steadily carving a name for itself in this niche market and grabbing market share.

Following the Action 4, DJI has launched the Action 5 Pro. According to DJI, “The latest generation of DJI’s popular Osmo action camera series delivers several industry-first features. From the 13.5-stop dynamic range and 4-hour battery life to the built-in subject centering and tracking, the Osmo Action 5 Pro sets a new quality standard for action photography, capturing every adventure from the sea to the mountains, whether in the sun or the snow.”

DJI has reused the 1/1.3-inch sensor from the previous iteration. However, the company claims it now boasts 13.5 stops of dynamic range, rivaling professional cameras. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro can record a 40MP still image, up from 10MP resolution photos. Images can be recorded in 10-bit D-Log M and HLG to boost dynamic range.

Users can shoot 4K 120p videos at a 4:3 (3,840 x 2,880 pixels) aspect ratio, in addition to 16:9. In other words, ultra-slow motion can now be captured to the entire sensor.

DJI has upgraded the battery to 1950mAh, which promises up to 4 hours of continuous use. Interestingly, buyers can also use the previous model’s batteries.

DJI has packed ‘industry-leading’ features in its latest action camera

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has subject centering and tracking. Supposedly an industry-leading feature, it allows users to shoot without a gimbal.

Similar to ActiveTrack on DJI drones, this feature, “intelligently detects a subject’s position and dynamically adjusts the composition to keep the subject centered in the frame”. The latest DJI action camera also has “SuperNight” mode that uses noise reduction powered by artificial intelligence to generate relatively clean video in low light.

The DJI Action 5 Pro has a slightly larger 2.5-inch OLED display. The camera is EN13319 certified to be waterproof without a case down to 20m (66 feet). Additionally, it has a pressure gauge to record underwater depth, duration, and altitude data. Interestingly, this camera can start recording automatically as soon as the user gets underwater.

Perhaps the biggest appeal of the camera, apart from the features and upgraded hardware, is the price. DJI offers an Adventure Combo, which includes the action camera and one battery, a protective frame, a quick-release adapter mount, and more. The Action 5 Pro Adventure Combo adds two more batteries and a charger, along with a 1.5m extension rod, for $449.
