The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has cautioned corps members against embarking on journeys without official approval, stressing that unauthorised travel exposes young graduates to preventable highway risks.
The warning was delivered at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Edo State, where the DG addressed 2025 Batch ‘C’ corps members deployed for the 2025 service year.
In a statement issued by the NYSC spokesperson, Gbenga Fanegane, the DG urged corps members to follow protocols before leaving their states of deployment.
The DG said travelling without permission is an avoidable risk that corps members must not take lightly, adding that safety on Nigerian roads remains a national concern.
“When travelling, always ensure you have authorisation. Do not put yourself in harm’s way on the highway,” he said.
The Director-General also urged members to stay security-conscious at their places of primary assignment, particularly in unfamiliar environments.
He warned strongly against night trips, describing them as one of the leading contributors to preventable service-year tragedies.
“You must take responsibility for your safety. Avoid unnecessary risks. Do not travel at night. Always be aware of your surroundings,” he added, urging members to confirm facts before posting online so misinformation does not create panic.
“Always get correct information, establish facts before circulating the same on social media platforms,” Nafiu said.
The DG further warned against involvement in social vices, noting that engagement in crime or violent groups could derail their future.
He said categorically that the corps is committed to protecting young graduates but that personal responsibility is key.
The statement quoted him as saying, “Abstain from social vices such as cultism, cyber crimes, thuggery and other negative acts that could jeopardise your personal safety.”
“Also, stay away from any acts capable of ruining your personal integrity or security,” the statement added.
Earlier, the Edo State Coordinator, Dr Ifeoma Frances Ben‑Ushie, commended the NYSC Director-General for improving conditions at the orientation camp for both corps members and officials.
She expressed the state chapter’s gratitude, saying the DG has “created an environment where corps members can thrive safely and confidently.”
“I want to thank the Director-General for providing the enabling environment for corps members and staff at the camp,” she said, acknowledging improvements in welfare and operational support at the orientation camp.
