Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz reimagines the classic story of The Wizard of Oz with a bloody horror twist.
Via Bloody Disgusting, the first images from Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz were revealed, showing grotesque horror reimaginings of the Wicked Witch of the West with a blood-smeared grin, glowing red eyes, and green makeup, the Tin Man with metallic paint streaked tears, and the Scarecrow with a decayed burlap mask and bloody teeth, and Dorothy looking on in horror. Written and directed by 22-year-old Elijah J. Alvarez in his debut, who also produces under his newly formed Buddy Pictures, Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz is set on Halloween night in Marin County, California and follows a group of college basketball players who fall victim to horrifying incarnations of Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and a pack of murderous clowns.
As the campus turns into a nightmarish war zone, each killing reveals deeper psychological horrors and eerie visions of Oz, forcing the students into a deadly struggle where they become both predators and prey, haunted by their own dark pasts. The cast includes Michael Sullivan, Logan Laurel, Heidi Appe, Melissa Foster, Aaron Byrd, Rocky Velasco, Angela Michaela, Yvonne Orozco, and Ava Barone.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz “explores the importance of self-identity, cycles of trauma, and the power of myth, blending elements of psychological thriller, supernatural slasher, coming of age, and science fiction.”
Writer-director Elijah J. Alvarez shared the following statement:
Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz showcases the real Gen Z student athlete experience in a way most contemporary horror films haven’t done yet. The way Get Out and Sinners used genre to push it forward hugely inspired this film, and I cannot wait for audiences to watch this genre-bending coming-of-age horror film.
Dorothy: The Haunting of Oz is currently in post-production and is due out in 2026. Its announcement likely isn’t a coincidence and is intended to capitalize on the current marketing hype surrounding Wicked: For Good, which releases in theaters on November 21.
