THE Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a six-count charge against a 27-year-old man, Innocent Chukwuemeka Onukwume, for allegedly calling for a military takeover in Nigeria through social media posts.
According to court filings, the charges were brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025. The DSS alleges that Onukwume used his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @theagroman, in October 2025 to publish messages encouraging the suspension of the civilian government, the ouster of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and support for a military coup.
The DSS counsel, A. M. Danalami, stated that the defendant’s actions contravened Sections 46A(1) and 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).
In one of his alleged posts, Onukwume wrote: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigerian government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
He reportedly made other inflammatory remarks calling for public support for the military and denouncing the current administration. The DSS said the same post was repeated multiple times on his account.
Onukwume, who resides in Umusayo Layout, Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, is expected to be arraigned later this week.
The case follows recent tensions sparked by unverified reports in October about an alleged coup plot by some military officers to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration — claims that were strongly denied by the Defence Headquarters.
In response to such reports, civil society groups, senior lawyers, and retired military officers have publicly warned against any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democratic system.
