A fresh controversy erupted at the Federal High Court on Wednesday after security operatives prevented several individuals from observing proceedings involving activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, sparking protests from his supporters and political associates.
The court premises witnessed heightened security as personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) maintained a strong presence around the venue.
Individuals who arrived to follow the case were subjected to restrictions, while movement within parts of the court complex was closely monitored.
Among those affected by the access limitations was the National Secretary of the African Action Congress (AAC), Oshiok Philip.
He openly challenged the action of the operatives, arguing that judicial proceedings should remain accessible to members of the public.
Philip maintained that denying citizens entry into a courtroom contradicts democratic principles and weakens public trust in the justice system.
According to him, security agencies must operate within constitutional boundaries and avoid actions that could be interpreted as intimidation.
“Public institutions function best when they remain transparent and accountable,” he said. “Restricting access to a court hearing raises serious concerns about openness and fairness.”
Furthermore, he urged the DSS to focus on strengthening its relationship with citizens by respecting civil liberties and the rule of law.
He warned that actions perceived as suppressing dissent could further damage confidence in state institutions.
The developments come shortly after a separate controversy surrounding Sowore’s detention.
Earlier in the week, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered that the activist be remanded in custody pending the continuation of legal proceedings against him.
However, supporters alleged that before correctional officials could take charge of the activist, DSS operatives intervened and removed him from the court premises.
The incident immediately drew criticism from political allies and civil rights advocates.
Witnesses claimed the operation caused confusion within the court complex and left Sowore with an injury to his arm.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have since become a subject of public debate.
