It has been more than three years since Dwayne Johnson made his superhero debut through Black Adam in the DCEU movie franchise. While it was an attempt to get the franchise in the right direction, Johnson’s time as the anti-hero was a short one.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the wrestler-turned-actor was asked about the results of Black Adam, with the trade asking, “Was your time in the ring as a heel of any value in playing Black Adam?” Johnson stated, “Oh, absolutely. I feel like not only my time as a heel in the ring in wrestling, but it was almost like the anti-hero that eventually the Rock became.”
He elaborated on how he “loved making Black Adam. We had a great time. Loved creating those characters and introducing other characters, as well, in that universe.” However, while he “had a great time,” Johnson concluded by saying, “Wish that universe well. And on to others,” as James Gunn’s DC Universe has now kicked off at DC Studios.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, based on a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam tells the story of Teth-Adam as he is awakened from his suspension and becomes the champion of Kahndaq. However, the Justice Society of America comes after Johnson’s titular character, before they and the anti-hero have to face Sabbac.
Not only were the Black Adam movie reviews mixed, but the film finished its box office run on a sour note, having only grossed $393.4 million at the worldwide box office. However, the film made more than some of the following installments in the DCEU movie timeline, as Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash grossed $134.1 million and $271.4 million, respectively.
Black Adam also marked the last time Henry Cavill played Superman on the big-screen, as the British star came back for a cameo in ...-credits scene. The plan was to eventually have Johnson and Cavill’s characters clash in a future installment.
On December 20, 2022, Johnson released a statement following the news of DC Studios’ launch with James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-CEOs. Johnson stated at the time that they “have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.”
Black Adam is available through home media release and on streaming.
