Dwayne Johnson is teaming up with Disney once again and has officially been cast in a new role after Disney’s $1 billion hit.
It has been confirmed that Johnson will be joining Disney’s upcoming animated movie Zootopia 2 as the voice of the character Zeke. The movie is set to release on November 26. The character Zeke’s official description is that he’s an accident-prone dik-dik who meets with a musical mishap as a result of Judy and Nick’s high-speed pursuit gone awry.
The sequel comes nearly 10 years after the original movie, which is highly regarded and currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98%. Zootopia 2 will follow rabbit cop Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and her partner Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) as they attempt to figure out a new case, which is even more dangerous and confusing than the last.
Zootopia (2016) was a huge success for the media giant Disney and earned over $1 billion at the box office, and had a budget of $105 million. It became the third-highest-grossing film for Walt Disney Animation Studios and also won awards, including an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It also earned an A at Cinemascore and set a new March record for an animated film opening.
The animated movie sequel is directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard. Bush has worked on other Disney movies, including Encanto and Moana. Idris Elba is returning to his role as ZPD’s water buffalo, Chief Bogo. Also in the cast are Ke Huy Quan (as the voice of Gary), Fortune Feimster (as the voice of Nibbles), and Andy Samberg (as the voice of Pawbert Lynxley).
Zootopia’s sequel is gearing up to be another worldwide success with an all-star cast and a promising storyline. Bush clarified his thoughts on making a sequel after the first film’s unprecedented success:
“Sequels are tricky. Audiences want familiarity but also expect growth. The key is making sure any evolution feels organic and integral to the story. You can’t just change a character’s design for the sake of change. People can sense when it’s unearned.”
Zootopia 2 is releasing on November 26, with a VOD release date still not announced.
