EDO: Assembly suspends all 18 LG chairmen, vice chairmen

Edo State

THE Edo State House of Assembly has passed a resolution suspending the chairmen and vice chairmen of all 18 local government councils in the state for a period of two months.

The Assembly also directed the leaders of the legislative arms in each council to assume leadership responsibilities during the suspension.

The decision followed a motion moved by Isibor Adeh, representing Esan North East One, and seconded by Donald Okogbe, representing Akoko-Edo Two.

Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo had petitioned the House, citing the refusal of the council chairmen to submit their financial records to the state government. Describing this refusal as insubordination and gross misconduct, the governor urged the Assembly to address the issue.

During the debate on the matter, 14 members voted in favor of the suspension, six opposed it, while three abstained from voting.

Prior to the vote, the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, instructed all the members to contribute to the discussion.

After deliberations, the Speaker directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to conduct a head count to determine the final tally of votes.
