Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed grief over the death of former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Parry Benjamin Osayande, describing him as a giant of impeccable character and a patriot who dedicated his life to national service.

In a statement issued on Sunday, September 28, 2025, by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor said Osayande’s death was a great loss not only to Edo State but also to Nigeria.

Okpebholo extended condolences to the Osayande family, the Benin Kingdom, and the people of Edo State, noting that the late DIG’s contributions to peace and security would never be forgotten.

“Our State has lost a giant, a man of impeccable character whose contributions to the peace and security of Nigeria, and specifically to the history of the defunct Bendel State and our current Edo State, can never be forgotten,” the governor stated.

He added that Osayande’s name had become synonymous with courage, discipline, and a deep commitment to justice.

Okpebholo recalled Osayande’s legendary exploits as Commissioner of Police in the defunct Bendel State, where he confronted notorious armed gangs of the 1980s.

“His legendary exploits during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in the then Bendel State, especially in confronting the high-profile criminal gangs of the 1980s, remain a benchmark for police operational excellence in our country,” Okpebholo said.

The Governor also highlighted Osayande’s impact beyond field operations, praising his intellectual contributions and reformist drive within the Nigeria Police Force.

“Even in retirement, DIG Osayande continued to serve as a national asset, lending his immense experience to various presidential and police reform committees, where his dedication to restructuring the police for better service delivery was evident. He was a true son of the soil who championed the cause of Edo people in every capacity he served,” the governor added.

The governor prayed for the repose of Osayande’s soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, and associates the strength to bear the loss.

Okpebholo prayed God to grant the soul of the departed eternal rest and provide the family, friends, and associates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
