The only Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) federal lawmaker from Edo State, Hon. Marcus Onobun, has announced his resignation from the party, citing persistent internal crisis and leadership instability as reasons for his decision.
Naijaonpoint reports that Onobun, who represents Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, formally tendered his resignation through a letter addressed to the PDP Ward 6 Chairman in Esan West Local Government Area on Friday.
The lawmaker explained that his decision followed “extensive consultations” with political associates, leaders, and constituents who, according to him, shared in his concerns over the current state of the party.
“It has become evident that the internal crises, leadership instability, and deep-seated divisions that continue to plague the party at all levels are no longer reconcilable,” the statement read.
“These unfortunate incidents have hindered the party’s ability to fulfil its founding fathers’ vision and effectively serve the Nigerian people.”
Onobun, a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, expressed regret over the party’s inability to resolve long-standing issues, saying it has undermined efforts toward meaningful governance.
“As a loyal party member, I have contributed my quota in service to the PDP over the years.
“However, in the interest of my people and the mandate I hold, I have to take a principled stand that allows me to pursue a more effective pathway toward development, unity, and good governance,” he noted.
Naijaonpoint reports that Onobun’s resignation adds to the growing list of high-profile defections from the PDP in recent months as the party continues to grapple with internal wrangling and leadership tussles at both national and state levels.
While he did not immediately disclose his next political destination, speculation is that Onobun may be eyeing an alignment with one of the leading parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
