Few hours after his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Marcus Onobun, the lawmaker representing Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency has defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
DAILY POST reports that the lawmaker who was received by the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo said his defection was both ideological and strategic.
According to him, I led the campaign for an Esan Governor. Now that we have one, I cannot be in the opposition. I have seen what Governor Okpebholo is doing. Edo people have seen it. I am back home to support him so that our people can get more,” he said.
Onobun who defected to APC alongside his supporters who had earlier defected with him to the PDP said their homecoming is a major consolidation of political strength ahead of future electoral contests in the State.
Receiving the defected federal lawmaker and his supporters, Governor Monday Okpebholo described the move as the final blow to the PDP in Edo State.
Okpebholo, opined that the APC is now firmly in control of Edo State, noting that all vestiges of the opposition will be completely erased by the 2027 general elections.
“We are not lobbying anyone to join APC; they are coming because they see the results of our governance. In 2027, 2.5 million votes from Edo were guaranteed for President Bola Tinubu,” he said.
DAILY POST reports that the former speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and an ally to former Governor Godwin Obaseki tendered his letter of resignation from the party to the Acting chairman of the party in his ward 6, in Esan West Local Government Area on Friday, July 18, 2025.
He also copied the Acting local government chairman, the Acting Edo State chairman and the Acting National Chairman of the party the resignation letter.
