As the Edo governorship election approaches, security personnel have intensified their presence across the state, establishing roadblocks to ensure a peaceful voting process.
The security measures began early Saturday morning, with personnel setting up checkpoints as early as 6:00 a.m., ahead of the scheduled voting start time of 8:00 a.m.
Officers at the roadblocks have been stopping and searching vehicles, questioning occupants to maintain law and order during the election.
While most motorists complied with the checks, some commercial bus drivers attempted to evade the roadblocks to continue their business, reflecting the urgency of the election day.
The popular Ring Road area saw a significant military presence, particularly at strategic locations such as the Sapele Road, Forestry Junction, and Sapele Road axes, where an armoured tank was stationed in the city center.
Heavy security was also noted on Ogida Road, Ekewaun Road, and at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office located at Ikpoba Hill.
According to NAN, additional roadblocks are set up in areas like Agbado Market and the Ring Road section of Akpakpava and Sapele Roads.
The streets were relatively quiet, with only a few vehicles and a handful of voters spotted walking towards polling stations.
The heightened security is part of efforts to prevent any potential disruptions during the election, as residents prepare to cast their votes in a highly contested gubernatorial race.
